SCAA: Backpacker tax update

The new tax for backpacker kicked in on 1 January after many months of debate and submissions.

In summary, it only affects those employees on working visas 417 & 462.

If you are employing workers on these two visas, you are required to

  • withhold 15% tax from their wages as opposed to the standard 13% for those ‘residents’ working in the industry.
  • employers need to register that they are employing those working on these two visas.
